An exhibition of new reliefs and sculptures, ‘Concretion’ deepens Felipe Cohen’s pursuit of giving tangible form to time, natural light, the atmosphere of a place, and the interplay between them. Using an artistic lexicon grounded in geometric forms, economy of means, and poetic sensibility, Cohen seeks to solidify fluid states, materialize abstract or evanescent phenomena, transform moments into memories.

A series of nine reliefs reveals the artist’s modus operandi: he develops a modular vocabulary of lines and shapes through which he evokes different landscapes, topographies, and objects associated with space and time. The same geometric elements, arranged in varying configurations, may call to mind a mountain landscape, a waterfall, a sunset, a rafter, or an hourglass. Exploring the effects created by light in space—from the dematerialization of the horizon through reflection and the accentuation of certain areas within a landscape to the shaping of our emotional experience of space—the series approaches light as a fluid body.

Other works in the exhibition formalize the passage of time through the materiality and appearance of plywood or function as a metaphor for sculptural making, the result of a reflection on the very meaning of this artistic act. 

‘Concretion’ will be on view from June 19 to July 25, 2026. This is the Brazilian artist’s second solo show with Gaep.

SHORT BIO
FELIPE COHEN (b. 1976, lives and works in São Paulo) is the winner of multiple awards – illy SustainArt Award at ARCOmadrid (2016), Atos Visuais Funarte (2007) and Fiat Mostra Brasil (2006) – and a four-time nominee to PIPA Prize in Brazil (2016, 2013, 2012, 2010). His practice develops from the tension between the traditional and contemporary ways of displaying the artistic object and the study of recurrent problems in art history in order to reinterpret and update their meanings in the present. Recent solo exhibitions include: Bordas da Tarde (Galeria Silvia Cintra + Box4, Rio de Janeiro, 2025), Sistemas para o poente (Kubikgallery, Porto, 2022), Eyelids (Gaep, Bucharest, 2022), Sol que abre o céu (Galeria Silvia Cintra + Box4, Rio de Janeiro, 2022), and Pálpebra (Galeria Millan, São Paulo, 2021). His work is part of museum collections such as Museu de Arte Moderna de São Paulo, Pinacoteca do Estado de São Paulo, Museu de Arte do Rio and SMoCA: Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art.

O expoziție de noi reliefuri și sculpturi, ‘Concretion’ extinde demersul lui Felipe Cohen de exprimare într-o formă tangibilă a timpului, luminii naturale, atmosferei dintr-un loc și interacțiunii dintre acestea. Cu un vocabular artistic caracterizat prin forme geometrice, economie de mijloace și sensibilitate poetică, Cohen caută să solidifice stări fluide, să concretizeze fenomene abstracte sau evanescente, să transforme momentele în amintiri.

O serie de nouă reliefuri dezvăluie modul său de lucru: artistul dezvoltă un lexic modular de linii și forme prin care sugerează varii peisaje, topografii și obiecte asociate cu spațiul și timpul. Aceleași elemente geometrice, în configurații diferite, pot aminti de un peisaj montan, o cascadă, un apus de soare, o grindă sau o clepsidră. Explorând efectele create de lumină în spațiu – de la dematerializarea orizontului prin reflexie și accentuarea anumitor zone dintr-un peisaj până la modelarea experienței noastre emoționale în acel spațiu –, seria abordează lumina ca pe un corp fluid.

Alte lucrări din expoziție formalizează trecerea timpului prin materialitatea și aspectul placajului sau funcționează ca o metaforă pentru creația sculpturală, rezultatul unei reflecții asupra semnificației acestui act artistic.

‘Concretion’ va fi deschisă între 19 iunie și 25 iulie 2026. Aceasta este a doua expoziție personală a artistului brazilian la Gaep.

Practica sa se dezvoltă din tensiunea dintre modalitățile tradiționale și contemporane de prezentare a obiectului artistic și studiul problemelor recurente din istoria artei, pentru a reinterpreta și actualiza semnificațiile acestora în prezent. Printre expozițiile personale recente se numără: Bordas da Tarde (Galeria Silvia Cintra + Box4, Rio de Janeiro, 2025), Sistemas para o poente (Kubikgallery, Porto, 2022), Eyelids (Gaep, Bucharest, 2022), Sol que abre o céu (Galeria Silvia Cintra + Box4, Rio de Janeiro, 2022) și Palpebra (Galeria Millan, São Paulo, 2021). Lucrările lui se află în colecții muzeale precum Museu de Arte Moderna de São Paulo, Pinacoteca do Estado de São Paulo, Museu de Arte do Rio și SMoCA: Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art.
